Malaysian Officials reported the disappearance and probable hijack of Singapore flagged Tanker MT Joaquim while its transit from Tanjung Pinang to Pulau Langkawi. The vessel disappeared from radar at 09:35pm from the radar and was found twelve hours later by a MPA.
According to Malaysian officials fuel oil worth USD 700.000 was stolen from the tanker, which may have been transferred to a so called „phantom vessel“. Although the majority of crimes against the shipping industry is in the Malaccas Straits are based on simple „hit-and-run“ tactics, such use „phantom vessels“ is quite common in the region.
