The recent warning referring the likely attempt of ISIS affiliated groups to build up a maritime component has been given by NATOs current Commander MARCOM, Vice Admiral Johnstone.
While the general scenario is not a new one, the ongoing turmoils in Libya and the success of ISIS affiliated insurgents next to the Gulf of Sidra clearly show, that the military deviation of the unstable political situation in Libya is not an unlikely one.
Notwithstanding the fact, that the announcement of any ISIS related maritime ambitions is currently a abstract possibility, the maritime industry should follow up the development in Libya closely for the upcoming shipping year, as the flexibility and initiative of the ISIS movement may cause hazard to the industry with only little advance warning time.
