Terroristic Attacks in Northern Sinai

With two attacks on Egyptian Police Forces on the weekend the situation in northern Sinai seems not to be stabilized yet. After an attack on a police transport vehicle left one policeman dead and three injured on saturday, a blast left two security personnel dead and three injured on Sunday, the Interior Ministry said.

In the framework of the recent inauguration of the new lane of the suez canal the question may arise if the suez canal itself will be an strategic target of islamistic attacks. After the Islamic State movement has claimed a rocket attack on an Egyptian navy boat moored in the mediterranean sea in middle of July it seems likely that such possible attacks may be conducted with sophisticated weapons like surface-to-surface missiles for which there is no protection with conventional security measures from the merchant shipping industry.
