While last weeks London International Shipping Week EU Naval Force Operation Commander warned, that the opportunity for pirates to get out to sea and attacked ships had been reduced, notwithstanding the pirates’ intend and capability remains.
In this framework a new report by securefisheries.org warns, that Illegal fishing off the coast of Somalia could lead to a resurgence of piracy. The report says illegal foreign trawlers are severely depleting fish stocks and catching three times more fish than Somalis are. The report is to be published on 16.09.2015 simultaneously in London and Nairobi.
While those concerns may be worth a discussion, the general security situation in Central and Southern Somalia stays uncertain. Recent attacks by Al Shabaab Forces against AMISOM Peacekeeping Troops in the Lower Shabelle region reveal, that a stabilization of the region is far away.
As an August report by BBC indicates, Piracy still seems to be a worthwhile business model in the former piracy stronghold of Eyl, the idem mentioned warnings may become true ahead of schedule as already earlier this year two Iranian vessels suspected of fishing illegally were seized by pirates off the Somali coast.
